If you have ever needed one bracket, a replacement plate or a run of fifty parts, you know the old routine. You email a drawing, wait a few days for a quote, answer questions, wait again, then find out there is a minimum order. Then the parts need painting, so you start over at a second shop.

That is how custom metal work has been ordered for decades. It works, but it is slow, and it shuts out anyone who only needs a handful of parts. Here is what changed, and what ordering looks like now.

The old way: five steps of waiting

A traditional job shop is built for big production contracts. Small orders get squeezed in when someone has time to price them. A typical small job goes like this:

  • Find a shop that does the cutting you need and will talk to you.
  • Send a drawing and wait two to five days for someone to quote it.
  • Go back and forth about material, thickness and quantity, each answer adding a day.
  • Hit a minimum. Many shops will not start a job under a set dollar amount.
  • Take parts somewhere else for bending, powder coating or galvanizing, and wait again.

Two weeks from idea to finished part was normal. For a contractor waiting on one bracket to finish a job, that is two weeks of a stalled site.

The new way: upload, price, done

Online metal shops flip the order around. Software reads your drawing, measures every cut and hole, and prices the job instantly. No one has to stop what they are doing to quote it, so there is no reason to turn small orders away.

  1. Upload your file. DXF, DWG, STEP, AI or SVG. No drawing? Send a sketch or photo with measurements and we will draw it.
  2. Pick your options. Material, thickness, quantity, and any bending, powder coating or galvanizing.
  3. See your price and pay. The price updates as you change options, so you can compare steel against aluminum in seconds.
  4. We make it and ship it. Cut parts ship in 2 business days, or pick them up locally.

Why one order beats three shops

The biggest hidden cost in the old way is not the cutting. It is the hand-offs. Every time parts move between shops, someone has to drive them, someone has to re-explain the job, and something can get scratched or lost. When cutting, bending and finishing happen under one order, you get one price, one delivery date and one place to call if something is wrong.

What you still need to get right

Instant pricing is only as good as the file you send. Draw at full size, close every outline and remove dimensions and notes before you upload. Our guide on preparing a file for laser cutting covers the five checks that matter.

Quick answers

Do I need an account to get a price?

No. Upload a file and your price appears right away. You only enter your details when you check out.

Can I order just one part?

Yes. There is no minimum order. One part is priced the same way as a hundred, with the price per part dropping as quantity goes up.

What if I don't have a CAD drawing?

Send a sketch or a photo with measurements and we will draw the part for you, then send you a price.

Rather talk it through?

Tell Alice what you're building in your own words, typed or spoken. She prices simple parts on the spot and passes anything custom to a person, who replies within one business day.
